Follow current progress at Fitzsimons
Since 1995, when the U.S. Congress designated it for closure, the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center has undergone significant transformation, under the direction of the FRA. Review a timeline of developments to date, as well as future milestones as the evolution of Fitzsimons continues. Though the redevelopment will continue for the next two decades, we have listed confirmed projects.

Research Complex I planned for completion and occupied with over 2000 employees by mid year.

Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion opens for patient care in February

Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion Emergency Room scheduled to open later in year.

The Children's Hospital to begin construction.

UCHSC Education 1-A to be completed in June

UCHSC Environmental Health and Safety (Facility Support I) scheduled for completion in May.

BIOWEST moves to a conference hotel expecting regional participation on October 27.

Fitzsimons Parkway begins construction and Colfax widening complete.

2003 FRA receives $5.1 Million from Economic Development Administration to support the new "Fitzsimons Parkway."

Pauls Corporation is selected as the developer for the Fitzsimons Commons, the town center for the Fitzsimons Life Sciences City.

Construction continues on the University Physicians building located on Colfax and Wheeling.

Certificates of Participation (COPs) approved by Governor Owens allowing for the University Health Sciences Center to accelerate construction.

Construction continues to progress on the Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion

FRA presents BIOWEST for the bioscience industry in the Rocky Mountain region, attracting over 500 participants, 51 exhibitors and world class speakers. Named industry event of the year by w3w3 radio.

FRA plans and stages the Fitzsimons Fourteeners--an event to enable biotech companies at the bioscience park center to share their business plans with an audience of industry insiders, media and venture capitalists.

2002 Completion and opening of Phase 1 of the University of Colorado Hospital Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion.

Nighthorse Campbell Native Health Building opens in September.

State Veterans Home at Fitzsimons opens in September.

New City of Aurora Police substation dedicated in August.

Completion of UCHSC Perinatal Research Facility.

The Reveille at Fitz renovates and offers more than 400 units of residential housing for rent.

The FRA introduces the first bioscience conference and exhibition 'BIOWEST" in the region.

In February, FRA plans and stages 1st annual Fitzsimons Fourteeners--an event to enable biotech companies at the bioscience park center to share their business plans with an audience of industry insiders, media and venture capitalists.

2001 Opening of Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute. This facility serves as a clinical care center for patients with diseases affecting vision, and provides advanced education for residents, graduate medical students and ophthalmologists in the region.

Construction begins on Nighthorse Campbell Native Health Building. When completed, this 50,000-sqaure-foot facility will serve as a centralized resource for 35 tribes across the country and function as the hub of the University's rural outreach program.

Construction begins on UCHSC Research Complex I.

First phase of PASCAL completed in February.

Construction begins on Phase I of UCH Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion

Construction begins on the 13,230-square-foot Perinatal Research Center expansion of the University of Colorado Hospital.

$500 million in construction to date.

FRA announces plans for development of I-225 Corridor, a mixed use business corridor and hotel complex at the southern edge of Fitzsimons.

The Children's Hospital announces plans to create a 400,000-square-foot pediatric health campus at Fitzsimons.

University Physicians, Inc. (UPI) announces plans to develop its headquarters on a three-acre parcel at Fitzsimons.

2000 Bioscience Park Center opens. The first of six planned bioscience facilities in Phase I of Colorado Bioscience Park Aurora, this facility offers exceptional resources and facilities to startup and early stage biotech companies.

Anschutz Centers for Advanced Medicine opens, including the Cancer and Outpatient Pavilions.

Fitzsimons Commons concept is added to master plan. This 30-acre parcel in the center of campus will serve as the village center--offering residential and lifestyle amenities.

Urban Land Institute Panel endorses UCHSC campus move.

Construction begins on Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute.

1999 Economic Development Conveyance approved.

First new site construction begins.

Anschutz gift to University of Colorado Hospital announced.

Construction begins on the University of Colorado Hospital Anschutz Cancer Pavilion. This 106,000-square-foot facility will offer outpatient care and house prevention and early detection programs and University of Colorado Cancer Center's clinical research program.

Construction begins on University of Colorado Hospital Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion. When completed, this 476,000-sqaure-foot facility will offer a complete range of primary and specialty ambulatory care and outpatient ambulatory surgery.

Active Army operations cease.

Construction begins on PASCAL (Preservation and Access Service Center for Colorado Academic Libraries). When completed, Pascal will hold up to six million volumes and provide climate-controlled housing for older materials in the libraries of the University of Colorado and University of Denver.

FRA conceives and introduces Colorado's Bio Breakfasts--a monthly gathering of the biotech industry to promote resource sharing and collaboration.

1998 First biotech companies move to Fitzsimons.

University Hospital and VA Medical Center clinics open.

1997 Interim FRA lease allows UCHSC occupancy and renovation of main hospital.

1996 Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority is activated, staffed and operational.

Army closes main hospital.

Master plan for redevelopment is produced.

CU Regents take first vote on Fitzsimons move.

1995 U.S. Congress designates Fitzsimons for closure--eliminating 4,000 military and civilian jobs within the next four years.

Officials from the City of Aurora, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and University of Colorado Hospital present an innovative proposal to the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., emphasizing the benefits of reusing the decommissioned base to construct a world-class medical campus.

Under an intergovernmental agreement, the City of Aurora and University of Colorado Regents form the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority.
