| Welcome
to the
Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority
Colorado's
$4.3 billion "square mile of life sciences" has
become the launch pad, hub and focus for the biotechnology
industry in the Rocky Mountain Region. The Colorado Bioscience
Park Aurora is the first university affiliated "biopark"
to be developed west of the Mississippi. It is adjacent
to the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and
Hospital Complex, The Children's Hospital, and the Fitzsimons
Commons town center. Together, these developments form a
stimulating and interactive scientific entrepreneurial community.

Collaborations
at Fitzsimons are facilitated by formal programs and informal
encounters. Facilities, services and support give start-up
and early stage bioscience companies the best possible opportunities
to succeed. An affiliation agreement provides research park
companies special consideration for access to university
core labs and services. New buildings and development parcels
at Fitzsimons can accommodate expansion-stage bioscience
companies and pharmaceutical R&D operations within the
campus setting.
Innovation
is a central theme to the Fitzsimons community. The work
of university research groups and institutes ranges from
human anatomy simulations and biomaterials to new cardiovascular
approaches to heart failure utilizing gene therapies. Private
biotechnology companies are focused on a multitude of advances,
among them: magnetically targeted chemotherapies to allow
greater concentration at tumor sites, advanced methods for
more accurate readings of mammograms, new treatments for
Alzheimer's disease, anti-fungal, identification of genetic
mutations that can increase crop yields and fight disease,
and a new class of vaccines for AIDS and other infectious
diseases.
Economic
Development
Employment
at Fitzsimons will reach 19,000 by 2010, with jobs in teaching,
patient care, basic-science research and biotechnology research
and development. Fitzsimons received the 2003 National Award
for Excellence in Technology-Led Economic Development from
the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration

Fitzsimons
is one of several visionary initiatives of the City of Aurora,
a city of 300,000 within the Aurora/Denver metro area that
is asserting itself as a premier 21st-Century community
for science and technology. Aurora's fast-paced emergence
as a biotech center is happening along side civic investments
and planned new communities, reflecting the livability and
vitality of Colorado's urban Front Range
Of
the 50 US states, Colorado ranks 2nd in potential for future
technology growth. (Science and Technology Index, Milken
Institute, September 2002). It has consistently been among
the top five states for placement of venture capital. Colorado's
biotech cluster has grown rapidly over the last ten years,
with a mix of locally founded companies along sid operations
of Amgen, OSI, Baxter and Roche.
The
Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority, City of Aurora and University
of Colorado invite companies, research institutes and entrepreneurs
to participate in the many biotech activities and events
at Fitzsimons - and to consider the opportunities of a location
in the largest medical-related redevelopment project in
the nation.
